CeCe Winans Portland Concert reviews
Fantastic performances but poor sound at theatre
Frightened Rabbit, an excellent warm up act from Scotland, did an extensive set showcasing the range and high quality of their music. The most important part, the music, was excellent, although they lacked stage presence as a band. It was a discovery for me, as I had heard them before but not really spent much time really listening to them. Some big fans sitting behind us knew the words to every song. CeCe Winans then came on stage with great energy and excellent performances, playing all the right songs and showcasing their unique brand of music and creativity really well. The stage was simple, and the lighting backdrop was great. I was surprised, however, by how much time the band spent in the dark (i.e., without spotlights on performers so you could just see shadows), and when there was a spotlight, it was almost always on Ben Gibbard, not the rest of the band. I would have liked to see more of them from where I was sitting. It does annoy me when we have seats, and the audience spends most of the time standing. That girl with the weird dancer moves... I like to sit, enjoy the music, and stand less. The sound system seemed to muffle the performance, and there was some feedback. All in all, great bands with excellent innovative music and style.
